THE Ghana Telecom University College (GTUC) has dedicated its graduate auditorium and a scholarship fund in honour of Mrs Florence M. N. Onny, the former Head of the University and International Programmes who passed away on July 5, while working .

The scholarship fund called the Florence Onny scholarship fund seeks to provide financial aid to the most brilliant and talented students at the university.

It would provide partial or full financial support to continuing students pursing diploma, undergraduate and post-graduate studies to cover tuition, accommodation and other academic expenses.

The auditorium is to honour Mrs Onny’s hard work and pioneering role in promoting graduate education as well as her initiative role in helping to improve GTUC.

The auditorium would be used for graduate school events including lectures, workshops, conferences, graduate school interviews, and other special activities.

At the dedication and launching ceremony, the President of GTUC, Dr Osei K.  Darkwa, said the late Onny, 43, gave her best to the school and served the university with dedication, honor and dignity.

“She believed deeply in what I call the “Spirit of GTUC”, a spirit of creativity, dedication, determination, courage, excellence, innovation and exploration that accepts no limits to the heights to which our university might reach”, he added.

He observed that after the university had its accreditation in 2006, Mrs Onny, together with Mr Kwame Asiedu coordinated the graduate programmes, adding that “she took a small piece of the school to make things better”.

He, therefore, advised the students to find inspiration in the auditorium and embark on a similar cause of championing righteous and great ambitions.

“Each time you enter the auditorium, remember you are at a special place named after a special individual who contributed immensely to the growth and development of this university”, he opined.

In addition, the vice president, Dr Robert Awuah-Baffour, said Mrs Onny dedicated her time and energy to put the school in an enviable position in the area of engineering, business and technology.

In appreciating her efforts, he said, the university decided to name its graduate auditorium and scholarship fund after her.

He observed that the university would also cater for her 16 year old son, Michael Onny who is a student at the Achimota Senior High School to the university level.

Launching the scholarship fund, the Council Chairman of GTUC, Prof Walter S. Alhassan said the selection for the scholarship would consider students who possessed three foremost qualities of the late Mrs Onny which included striving to achieve excellence in all areas; an entrepreneurial and creative approach to problem-solving, professionalism, patriotism, and voluntarism.

Mr Alhassan disclosed that applications for the scholarship would be opened on June 1, 2013 for two months for September applicants and September 1, 2013 for two months for January 2014 applicants.

He used the occasion to appeal to individualS and organisations to contribute generously towards the fund to enable it support sizable merit-based students at GTUC.

He acknowledged that Mrs Onny was not only a blessing to him but to all who came in contact with her and urged all to follow her footstep so that their efforts would also be rewarded.
